October in the Speech Room!!

September flew by and October is well under way.  I was available at Highland Elementary School the afternoon of Conferences and met with a few parents.  If anyone would like an update on student performance, feel free to email me at n.little@schoolofwestfield.org, or call me at either 642-7130 (Russell Elementary) or 572-6428 (Highland Elementary).

Highlighted book for the month is "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves" by Lucille Colandro.  The story is fun to read, with lots of repetitive lines which rhyme.  Many of your child’s objectives can be targeted while reading this story.

Targeted Objectives include:

  • Sequencing
  • use of ordinal concepts (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.)
  • grammar- verb tense
  • comprehension- question responding
  • problem solving
  • rhyme
  • ·vocabulary
  • story grammar- characters, setting, problem, actions, solutions

Highlighted game for the month is “Headbands”.  This game teaches how to ask general to more specific questions, categories, describing words, and is lots of fun.  Try playing at home.  Don’t forget how much your local library has to offer.  They have books, kits, educational videos, puzzles, and even games for you to use at home.  Enjoy the beautiful outdoors before the snow flies.

Thank you,
